Wellness Wednesday 5: Happy Hair Moments

The ONSET of HAIRFALL with the ONSET of RAINFALL

We have an early monsoon this year. It brings relief from the scorching heat of the summers. Nature wears a green and dewy look but most of us experience heavy hair loss during this season.

A sneak peak into the HAIR GROWTH CYCLE:

Hair loss is a part of the natural hair growth cycle and is an essential part of growing new and healthy hair.

Just like we lose old and dead skin on a regular basis it is also vital to lose old and dead hair on a regular basis (not to forget hair is made of dead material called keratin).

Each hair follicle goes through:

A longer growing phase (Anagen) followed by short period of resting phase(Catagen) during which the hair follicle is still attached to the scalp but it is no longer active.

It then enters the falling phase (Telogen) and once the old hair sheds it creates a space for a new hair follicle to grow.

That’s why many of us notice hair while we are washing our hair, while applying oil on scalp, on the pillow after waking up.

Monsoon spells:

· High level of moisture & humidity in the air

· Lack of sufficient sunlight

These create an environment for all kinds of fungus and bacteria (microbes) to thrive. And believe it or not, this has a huge impact on our scalp and hair health.

Our scalp has an ecosystem of its own. It’s dark, warm, moist and works well as a unique environment for a number of organisms. Sebum - the natural protective oil  produced by the body’s sebaceous glands - tends to accumulate very easily on the scalp, especially if it’s not cleaned frequently and in humid climatic conditions. Microbes usually feed on this sebum to breed, which is why we may be at risk of everything from dandruff to lice during monsoon.

Keep your hair clean and dry

Leaving the scalp & hair with dead keratin cells ( we lose them everyday) could lead to dandruff, dry, weak ,brittle and undernourished hair, which would eventually fall.

If you work out, or play sports that make you sweat, try and wash at least once in two days, or preferably everyday with a mild shampoo. ( Summer Sense by M&D Moments is one such Shampoo).  This also helps the hair to GROW IN LENGTH

Do not tie wet hair-

Do not tie wet hair, even if it takes longer to dry in this weather, it can cause breakage. If your hair gets wet in the rain, wash it with regular water, because rainwater contains pollutants from the air, which are not good for the hair.

Oil Massage or Shiroabhyanga-

A quick oil massage with mild luke warm oil with some Neeli ( Indigo) and few drops of essential oil of ROSEMARY would help control microbial infection, as well as hair fall.

Scalp Mask or Shirolepam-

Make a paste of Til or Sesame with Fenugreek & Amla ( Indian Gooseberry). Apply on the scalp for 45 minutes and wash off with water. This mask would help maintain the pH balance of the scalp and control hairfall.

Nasya (nasal drop) –

A nasal drop of “Anu tail” every year during the rainy, autumn and spring season when the sky is free from cloud, along with many other benefits, it prevents hair fall and also accelerates the growth of hair. Nasya nourishes the srotas present above the clavicle including the hair follicles which strengthen the hair and reduce falling.

Snana (taking bath) –

As per Acharya Sushrut the head and hair should not be washed with warm water or with very cold water. Warm water over head reduces the strength of hair & eyes.  Proper hair wash should be done at least three times in a weak. Shampoos and soaps used for hair wash should be mild and free form chemicals. Decoction(Kashayam) or Shampoo made up of herbs like Henna, Bringraj, Jatamansi, Shoe flower, Ghrit Kumari, Shikakai, Motha, Bhrami etc. can be used for washing hair. ( Kashayam Shampoo)

Kshaurakarma – Hair cutting & proper care of hair of scalp & beard should be done regularly.

Acharya Charaka mentions that we should cut nail thrice every fortnight and cut hair once in three months.

Ushnishka – wearing of ushnishka (turban or cap)

This protects the hair from wind, heat, dust etc. which is beneficial for hair. Covering of head protects the hair from environmental factors.

Maintain Scalp health-

The keratin of the hair has this unique property of absorbing moisture from the air and becoming swelled up. If each hair follicle is deep rooted and well nourished                   (nourishment is absorbed by the hair roots or the follicles itself from our body), it can absorb nourishment well and control hair fall. Ensure to keep the scalp absolutely clean & balanced.
